California Ammunition Registration
In accordance with Penal Code sections 30352and 30370
How do I purchase ammunition?
To buy ammunition you must undergo an eligibility check for every purchase. There are 3 types of eligibility checks:
1. Standard Eligibility Check. You use this check if you have purchased a firearm within the last 5 years under your current address. It has a $1 DOJ fee. That fee must be paid even if you are denied. The check happens within a couple of minutes. We at 5 Dogs Range will be doing these checks when you are purchasing ammunition at our facility.
2. Basic Eligibility Check. You use this check if you have never purchased a firearm or haven’t done so under your current address (or in a very long time). It has a $19 DOJ fee. This check can take up to 10 days for you to be approved. The approval only lasts 30 days and is only good for a 1-time purchase of ammunition. 5 Dogs Range will not be doing these checks.
3. COE Check. This check is for anyone who has a Certificate of Eligibility to sell ammunition, firearms, or both. If you have your COE number, we will perform these checks.
How long is the eligibility check good for?
All eligibility checks are only good for a 1-time purchase.
How much ammunition can I purchase?
There are no limits to the amount you can purchase on an eligibility check. However, the facility may limit how much you can purchase based off inventory.
What do I need to purchase ammunition?
You need a valid government ID. If your ID says, “Federal Limits Apply” then you will not be able to purchase ammunition with that ID.
How do I check if my information is up to date?
To update your personal information on a record in the Automated Firearms System, log into your CFARS account, click on “Automated Firearms System (AFS) Personal Information Update,” and follow the instructions. If you do not have a CFARS account, you may create one by visiting https://cfars.doj.ca.gov/. There is no fee to update your information.
